Event at Taman Baca on October 24 2024: The Mountain Gives Way to the Sea

"The Mountain Gives Way to the Sea" is an exhibition and digital publication inspired by three moving image artworks from Australian-Balinese artist Leyla Stevens. Initially exhibited at CushCush Gallery in Bali in 2023, Stevens' works form the foundation for collective discussions about transcultural and transnational histories, memories, and the ways in which Bali's coastlines have been reshaped by global tourism and lingering colonial imaginations. This publication features essays from artist Leyla Stevens, curator Bianca Winataputri, and Balinese writers and scholars, including Savitri Sastrawan, I Ngurah Suryawan, I Nyoman Gede Mahaputra, and Juli Sastrawan. They explore themes of place transformation, alternative histories, and the sense of belonging in Bali, both now and into the future. This work is also a tribute to the late writer and performer Cok Sawitri, featuring her final poem, Segara Gunung Tak Menepi, which was specially commissioned for this project. -Time: 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (Bali time) -Free Admission
