Originally inspired by a ritual Balinese trance dance, Western artist Walter Spies collaborated with local dancer Limbak in the 1930s to create a unique performance featuring a chorus of 100 men and no musical accompaniment. The innovation continued in 1970 when renowned Javanese dancer and choreographer Sardono W. Kusumo introduced elements of Javanese theater traditions to the Kecak dance. This captivating version of a classic is a must-see while in Ubud.
