Event at Bali, Island of Gods everyday in 2024: Mekare-Kare - (Pandan Wars)

A captivating event on Bali's cultural calendar is Mekare-Kare, commonly known as the 'Pandan Wars,' occurring in Desa Adat Tenganan Pegringsingan, a unique 'Bali Aga' village in Karangasem. This community preserves distinct customs and a way of life predating the influences of the Hindu-Javanese Majapahit Empire that shaped much of Bali's identity. The highlight in Tenganan Pegringsingan is during the fifth month of their ritual calendar, typically in June or July, known as Usaba Sambah. This month-long ceremony encompasses prayers, sacred dances, sacrifices, ceremonial foods, ritual swings, and gatherings, culminating in the intense spectacle of Mekare-Kare. Over two days, the village comes alive with villagers donning traditional attire, adorned with prized geringsing cloth, and making ceremonial offerings throughout the day. Around midday, the stage is set for Mekare-Kare as men engage in combat with bunched, thorny pandan leaves in one hand and a rattan shield in the other. The objective is to grate the opponent's skin with the sharp thorns as a blood sacrifice honoring Dewa Indra, the God of War and their principal deity. This event is a lively and exhilarating cultural experience, offering a glimpse into the rich traditions of Tenganan Pegringsingan.
